In 2016, Bastidas Architecture joined Juan de Dios, the creator of the concept, and Virginie Pauchet, a local architect, to collaborate with the association “Solidarité Marathon des Sables” in the restoration and expansion of the Ameskar school. The NGO, now known as ASSOCIATION AMESKAR-POUR LE DVPT. ET LA SLDT., aimed to provide the people of Ameskar with benefits in three key areas: culture, health and well-being, and sustainable economy.
To achieve this, local materials such as adobe were used, and traditional construction techniques were applied. The goal was to promote self-sufficiency in Ameskar, so that people could apply the knowledge gained in the construction of new buildings and in the development of their own economy. This would generate a sense of empowerment and enable local economic growth.

Ameskar el Fokani is a small Berber settlement located in the mountainous area of Mgoun, in the High Atlas of Morocco. At an altitude of 2,200 meters, its approximately 500 inhabitants face harsh climatic conditions and difficult terrain. Labor migration, informal livestock farming, and limited agriculture are the main sources of income for the community. These activities provide livelihood opportunities for the residents, allowing them to sustain their daily life in this challenging environment.
The first project focused on restoring and expanding a school that serves students aged 5 to 16. The existing classrooms were improved, and sanitary facilities, a common room, and a kitchen were built. Thermal insulation and a wood stove system were implemented to ensure a comfortable environment. Additionally, a semi-covered courtyard was created for recreational and outdoor activities. The main goal was to create a welcoming and suitable school for the education and well-being of the children of Ameskar.
We are moving forward with our second objective: health and well-being. Currently, a hammam is under construction thanks to the first donations received. This space will accommodate the imam and provide hygiene services to the community, including a laundry and bathrooms. The project aims to improve sanitary conditions and promote well-being within the community. In this phase, we have the collaboration of architects Asma Hamzaoui and Najat Ait Amer.
In Phase 3 of the project, a Visitor Center will be created to boost tourism and local trade in Ameskar. This center will allow the community to promote cultural tourism and market their products, fostering a sustainable economy. Additionally, it will provide a space to showcase the history, culture, and traditions of Ameskar, offering visitors an immersive and educational experience. It will be a key step towards the sustainable development of the region.
